New series: Raising Hope

I just downloaded and watched Raising Hope. I have to admit, if I'd watched the trailers before watching the series, I probably wouldn't have bothered downloading it. Instead, I've got to say, the series is much much better than the trailers would lead you to believe.

The series is about a young guy, about 22, who comes from a lower class family. Both his parents have minimum wage incomes and live in the house of the greatgrandmother, along with the main character, Jimmy, and cousin Mike. The greatgrandmother is suffering from Alzheimer, and isn't aware of what's going on around her, and the few moments she's aware, she seems to be inclined to want her family out of her house. In short, Jimmy's life sucks.

When we first see him, Jimmy is working for his dad, fishing leaves out of the pool and gets fed up with it. He's just about planning to try and improve his life, when a young girl comes running out of a house and seems to be chased by someone. Jimmy tries to save the damsel in distress and ends up sleeping with her. His bad luck holds though, and she turns out to be a serial killer. Anyway, she gets arrested, and sent to the electric chair only to leave Jimmy with their newborn babygirl, Princess Beyonce.

Jimmy's parents try to convince him to just bring the baby to the firestation or something. (is this an American thing or something?) Only Jimmy refuses to get rid of his daughter. Regardless of everything, he still tries to do right by his baby.

What I like about this series and what isn't clear in the trailers, is that Jimmy is NOT a loser. He's an underdog.

The difference? He's not stupid, as much as that he just doesn't know stuff, but he's willing to learn. His parents just didn't know what they were doing, so they never taught him any of it either. He reads books on babycare and once he's learned something, he does his best to follow it.

He's not a perfect parent, hell, he'll have a lot to learn about even the basics, but it's clear he loves that baby and would do anything to do his best to care for her. And that's what keeps him from being a loser. And what keeps him interesting to me.

Hoping the second ep will be as fun as the first one.

That sure is one hell of a cute baby though. And she definitely deserves the name, Hope, that she ends up getting by the end of the ep.

That does sound interesting!

Some Firestations, churches, hospitals and certain chain stores have signs on them saying they are "safe places" - rather than have the horror of an unwanted child ending up in a garbage can or left by the side of the road - "Safe places" are, in New York State, where the child can be left so that it will be safe and cared for.

I'm not entirely sure how well the system works, but people are trying.

It is actually. I like how the family remains sympathetic. A lot of shows like this overexaggerate the family's crudeness or loserdom. Hell, it's why I never managed to tolerate shows like Married with Children.

But even though the family's situation is played for laughs, there's a heart to it at the same time. You come to care about this family. (well not the cousin, he's just annoying) But the mother and father, the greatgrandmother and Jimmy and his baby, those people you come to care about and you want them to do well. Which is what keeps me from cringing over it, like I do with most shows where they make the main char a loser.

And thanks for the info, got confused about that for a second till I rewatched it and they did mention something about safedropping the baby at the firestation.

There is. I spent the vast majority of the episode laughing my tush off, but I admit, I cried when the Mom and Dad came in and sang Hope to sleep.

Huh that was actually pretty good. I get what you mean about them giving them heart and not just making them stupid.
