Spike, God, definitely Spike. I wouldn't have thought so when he was still a bad guy, but what got my interest with him from the start is that even before I started watching Buffy, I'd read a fic that mentioned him siding with Buffy in Becoming. But I must admit, I didn't really start liking the character until s4. I think it's the Initiative, where Spike was captured and forced to deal with a new situation. Being crippled by the chip and overcoming it. The idea that his life changed overnight and he could have sat down in a corner feeling sorry for himself, but he didn't. He pulled himself together and went to the very people that he knew would try to kill him and dared to asked for their help because he believed in them. Because he believed that they were good and he still had that slightly romantic view of the world, of looking at things in good and evil and believing that this meant that cause the scoobies and Buffy in specific were heroes, that they would help him. And then have this proved when they did do so and took him in.
I've seen people complain about them doing so, but the thing is, that's what used to make Buffy and the scoobies heroes. That even while killing Spike might have been the expedient thing to do, but once they knew he was truly helpless, they helped him.
And then Intervention happened. I don't think that any character has ever gained my love and a favorite spot faster in my life. Once Spike proved his love for Buffy... let's just say I have a thing for heroes, for people who rise back up no matter what life throws at them. But the only thing that beats that is a redeemed villain, or at the very least a bad guy choosing and or trying to be good or on the way there... So combine those two, a char who will always try and get back up, with a man on the road to redemption, and add a sprinkle of true love...And that's why Spike's number one, no matter what Dark Horse or IDW might do to him.
I don't just feel for Spike, I don't just empathize with him, when I watch Spike, it's like I see myself. He's probably the most human character on Buffy, and even now, when I read Buffy fic, if Spike isn't in it, it feels like it's missing the heart of BtVS. Without Spike, Buffy's just... a show about a bunch of kids fighting monsters. Like Scooby Doo, with him...Spike is what makes buffy for me, he's what turned the show from a 'watch when it's on' show into a 'must download and watch right away' show.
I must admit, if BND hadn't happened Spidey would be a strong contender for this spot, he has been a fave since I was ten. But since BND, I can't think of a single moment with this character in Amazing, where I don't want to see him killed of, so sorry, but he lost top spot, you have Quesada and Wacker to thank for that.
Now Dean's my current fave, and the guy that runs around in my head at the moment. And that's just... shocking. Oddly enough, I always tend to see him and Sam as a combo of Spike, that together they come together and bring Spike to me. And that's probably why I don't mind Buffy/Dean fics as much, as I would mind Buffy with any other character but Spike*g*
Day 15 - Favorite female character
Been wondering about this one, and still not sure.
Buffy of course. Hero, broken but keeps fighting...
Mary Jane Watson Parker, one of the strongest women in comics. (you know, prior to BND.) There's an inner strength and a bit of common sense about her that's rare to find. She's the perfect counterpart to Peter, exuberant where he is quiet, outgoing where he is still shy...
She actually had a personality of her own that made her noticeable. And I think it's that what makes guys like Quesada and Wacker and Slott ... hate her so much. Because they can't just add their own fantasies on her, like they can with Gwen or their new girl Carly. Because they actually had to treat her as a character, rather than as a piece of cardboard love interest that they could fill in wherever they want like the white piece in a scrabble game.
Guys like that can't stand that, because to them, one female character should be easily replaceable with the next. And MJ was never that.
Got to say that Mayday Parker holds a high space as well, but then what else could you expect for a combo of the best qualities of Peter and MJ.
And other than that Debra Morgan and Rita Bennet Morgan from Dexter hold high spaces as well.
